NIGER – Back to the roots
The most successful marriage of mineral elements:
the Arakao caldera, filled by the patience of the wind into an immense sand building; the Montagnes Bleu, precious ash-blue marble reliefs; the sandstone cathedrals of Djado; the endless 360-degree horizon of the Ténéré of Tafassasset, so flat that even the human eye notices that the land is round; the endless cordons of dunes of the Erg of Bilma follow one another seamlessly; they are the terrain of the Taghalamt, the famous salt caravans: a line of black dots on the horizon, men and camels, have been traversing the desert of deserts for hundreds of years to continue living according to their millennia-old tradition. Here there is a place, Gadafowa, where one suddenly risks finding oneself nose to nose with a dinosaur, lying in the desert for tens of millions of years. The mythical town of Agadez, with its soaring minaret on the counter, the oases of Timia and Ierouane nestled in the mountains, are the pulsating hearts of the Tuareg people.
Niger is where our Saharan roots lie, a place of our heart, where year after year our history has been built: as Prof. Théodore Monod used to say, every Saharan has his “diocese,” and this is ours.
