Zakouma, the animal Kingdom
Zakouma National Park today represents one of the last examples of a “Sudanese” ecosystem in all of Africa. The protection measures put in place since 1989 and the good maintenance of local ecosystems have enabled a spectacular re-establishment of the local fauna: elephants, buffalo, antelopes, big cats, giraffes now abound on the plains of Zakouma.

Minimum number of participants: 8Situated between the desert belt to the north and fertile rainforest regions to the south, Zakouma National Park enjoys a rich hydrographic system with the Salamat River and its tributaries flooding the eastern part of the park during the rains, and when these flooded areas dry up, the remaining water serves to bring together the diversity of mammals and birds in extraordinary numbers
Zakouma National Park is an integral part of flora and fauna conservation in the region. The government of Chad is committed to protecting this natural heritage by restoring the “Greater Zakouma” ecosystem.
With the revision of the park’s conservation laws, African Parks’ excellent management, and community engagement strategies in place, wildlife numbers have increased considerably and poaching was virtually eliminated in 2016. Its transformation underscores the crucial links between security, sustainable livelihoods, and wildlife conservation: today, the Zakouma ecosystem is the main safe haven for wildlife in the Sudanese-Sahelian zone of West and Central Africa.
Zakouma National Park offers a wildlife experience unparalleled on the African continent.
