Danakil, land of the Afar
The Danakil Depression, or land of the Afar, is a large triangle between the Ethiopian plateau and the Red Sea. It begins at the foot of Tigray, and is the lowest point in all of Africa. Coming back from the depression, we’ll visit the rock churches, real architectural gems hidden in the mountains.
- INFODuration: 9 days
Minimum number of participants: 8We will take a journey-expedition in one of the most inhospitable and fascinating places in the world, which has practically no rain and where temperatures can be extremely severe. However this is a land that offers travelers, who are curious and have the spirit of adaptability, breathtaking landscapes and incredible emotions that make any little discomfort seem secondary.
In the wild desert landscape, immense and extremely varied, dominated by basaltic layers in which all the geological world’s concerns vibrate, we will discover a landscape that glistens and ripples like pack ice and the salt caravans, and we’ll visit the Dallol (the place of spirits), a mineral universe par excellence. We will climb the Erta Ale volcano (the smoking mountain) famous for its lava lake. We will get a close look at the untamed and fascinating world of the Afar: the nomads who live in this hostile region. Due to their firm resistance to colonial penetration, and because they are considered to be fierce Danakil robbers, they have always been the protagonists of explorers’ stories.
