Borkou was also the name of a large lake that was fed by the waters of the even larger Lake Chad via the Bahr el Ghazal river. These formed the lake system of Mega Paleo Chad. Evidence can be found in paintings depicting boats, oars and fishing trips, and the remains of bone hooks and harpoons preserved in the lake sediments.
