a journey of great emotions precisely because of a set of very different and complementary regions: mountainous massifs of volcanic origin, large oueds with nomads, a living desert on one side; absolute isolation, large ergs and immense dunes, tassili and sandstone on the other.
North of Tamanrasset, in the Adrar Ahnet, the desert takes its place and announces the regs and large ergs that are the very essence of the Saharan landscape. The spaces extend as far as the eye can see and the imagination; the lines of the ridges recede into the horizon and the isolation becomes absolute. The relief apparently stops abruptly, but these great tassili are mixed with chains of blond and voluptuous dunes. Sand-covered oueds insinuate themselves between jagged mountains and cut the cliffs into tormented canyons. Contrasts between the desolate mineral purity and a sometimes-exuberant vegetation that manifests itself in equally luminous spots: fig trees that shelter in the canyons, acacias on the sides of the mountains.
A great love of Théodore Monod, a region where he took his first steps as a Saharan scientist, the Adrar Ahnet is composed of a multitude of small sandstone plateaus more or less compact, the result of an unstoppable erosion of water, wind and time: the sand is omnipresent. The erg In Afarag, which separates the Ahnet from the Tanezrouft, Tissedgfit, with its enormous red dunes that end on the black masses of the tassili of Taghit, and Mehedjebat erg, with its sands that cover the entire yellow palette, are some of the unforgettable stages of our pilgrimage. A journey that, thanks also to walking, allows the discovery of the immense variety of Saharan landscapes.
