We began thinking about this program as a trekking trip on Mount Etna thanks to the knowledge of our Sicilian friend and volcanologist. His suggestions, however, were so original and passionate that we decided to expand this route’s horizon.
The islands of Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli offer visions of a remarkable natural chaos, while the Etna trekking offers a change from the typical Mediterranean environment to a severe and snowy one, which is made accessible and compelling by simple scientific explanations. And then we move on, further south, to the province of Syracuse, in the relaxing setting of an old but comfortable "masseria" farmhouse. From here, we will go to the Vendicari Natural Reserve, an ornithological paradise with white beaches and a clear blue sea, and then to the Cavagrande reserve for a walk along the Cassibile river’s canyon to discover prehistoric caves dug into the rocks amongst waterfalls and small lakes. Finally we move on to Syracuse to visit Ortigia, the ancient greek city center.
